As the series build momentum and this book became a bestseller, it is now quite scarce and desirable in the first printing.
This collection opens with Raggedy Andy's debut in the story "How Raggedy Andy Came" before Andy, male rag dolls were quite unusual. Mixing the down to earth with the witty, the Raggedy Ann and Andy series also blend charming images for children with a Jazz Age sensibility. The books were based upon a rag doll he had designed with bright red hair, though Gruelle "always considered Raggedy Ann and Andy to be, first and foremost, storybook characters, whose personas had been born and refined on the printed page" (Hall 17).
